(Analysis of General Chemistry Portion)

Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi conducts combined entrance examination for the admission in M.Sc. Biotechnology (CEEB) every year, on behalf of nearly 33 universities and it alone offers approx. 500 + seats.

The paper is divided into two parts; Part - A & Part - B

Chemistry is the compulsory portion of both parts, there are usually 15 questions from chemistry out of 60 questions in the Part - A while the number of questions being asked in Part - B from chemistry portion are usually 16 to 18. 

For the ease of study we may divide chemistry portion into four categories viz General chemistry, Inorganic chemistry, Organic chemistry and Physical chemistry. Here in this post we will discuss the trends and number of questions being asked from the General chemistry.

General chemistry includes the following chapters: Laws of chemistry, Mole concept, Atomic structure, Radioactivity, Chemical bonding, Redox chemistry. Let’s first have a look at the number of questions being asked from this portion during the last five years.

It is noteworthy to mention over here that no question was asked from the chapter Laws of chemistry.

If we further analyze the papers we observe that maximum questions were asked from the chapter chemical bonding and atomic structure.

Another important perspective we draw....... is that two of the above mentioned topics i.e. atomic structure and radioactivity also offer a few questions in Physics portion of both Part A & B. 
Here i present a brief analysis of the trends in physics portion (both Part A & Part B) of last five year papers.

After analyzing the past trend i firmly suggest that if one is well versed with above five topics (mole concept, atomic structure, radioactivity, chemical bonding and redox chemistry) it’s a good stake, you surely will find not less than ten questions in both Chemistry and Physics portions.

To enhance your chances to qualify entrance exam we are trying to provide you the pattern of the exam and trends of topics. However this time we have limitations as we have only one paper (2014) to analyze, the earlier papers are not available neither in the market nor in the university’s resources.

First coming to the pattern of examination; the paper is divided into two parts viz Section - A and Section - B.

Section A contains 100 questions of MCQ type, each with two marks and no negative marking. While the Section B consists of 10 short answers type questions, each with 10 marks and the answers to be written within the boxed space provided for that question.

Zoology is the vast subject includes both core areas of animal sciences and applied area of biology therefore we can discuss the topics accordingly.

1. The core areas of animal sciences as the name suggests, includes classification, diversity in animal kingdom, animal physiology, evolution and developmental biology. As the table below shows there are 44 questions from these topics in Section-A in 2014, upto 50 questions are expected in the entrance.

a. For animal physiology mainly focus on human physio especially on excretion-osmoregulation, digestive, endocrine, nervous and respiratory systems.

2. Applied areas of biology especially molecular biology, genetic engineering, biochemistry, microbiology and cell biology are good bat and scoring. Class notes and study material we had provided you are more than sufficient for these topics.

a. For the microbiology topics you must emphasize on human diseases, their causative agents, vectors, microbial culture, growth and nutrition.

3. Ecology is important for both sections, at least 5-8 questions are expected in section A.

For section B (short answer questions) focus on diagram, graph, curve, pathways, comparison, tables and phenomenon related topics. Cultivate the habit to write brief answers, draw figures, graphs etc. on rough papers, and follow the principles of Attention, Retention, Reproduction and Motivation as stated by A. Bandura.
